The COVID-19 pandemic, especially during the years 2020 and 2021, was a dark period in global history. The virus wreaked havoc across the world, and India was severely affected, with thousands of deaths reported daily. In these trying times, the Kalinga Bharti Foundation (KBF), under the dynamic leadership of its Founder and National President, Mr. Akshay Kumar Samal, stepped up to provide critical support and relief to the affected communities. This blog highlights the selfless efforts and brave actions of KBF during the pandemic, emphasizing their impact on the lives of many, especially the Pravasi Odias in Delhi NCR.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to an unprecedented health crisis, with countless lives lost and communities devastated. In India, the situation was dire, with hospitals overwhelmed, medical supplies scarce, and many people struggling to survive. Among those affected were the Pravasi Odias, with more than 162 Odias losing their lives in Delhi NCR alone.
Amid this crisis, Mr. Akshay Kumar Samal, a dedicated social worker and the Nodal Officer of Odisha Moparibar, demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment. For nearly three months, he worked tirelessly on the ground, meeting people, helping patients, and saving lives. His efforts extended beyond the Odia community, assisting over 5000 people from various backgrounds.
During the lockdown, when most people were confined to their homes, Mr. Samal and the KBF team were actively involved in distributing essential supplies. They provided oxygen cylinders, concentrators, masks, medicines, ambulances, protective kits, gloves, sanitizers, and goggles to those in need. Their grassroots efforts were crucial in mitigating the impact of the pandemic.
One of the most remarkable instances of KBF's efforts was when 21 tribal labor families from Odisha were stranded at the Gurugram railway station during the lockdown. These families had no money, food, or water and were on the brink of despair. Mr. Akshay Kumar Samal immediately rushed to their aid, providing a month's supply of dry food, rations, money, and medicine. With the support of the Odisha Government and the Haryana local administration, he arranged for their safe evacuation.
Mr. Samal also took on the somber task of handling unclaimed bodies. He ensured that 10 unclaimed bodies, mostly belonging to people from Odisha, received proper cremation. This act of humanity provided a dignified farewell to those who had lost their lives and brought solace to their grieving families.
For his exceptional bravery and dedication, Mr. Akshay Kumar Samal was recognized and awarded by various organizations. The Ministry of Health and other social organizations honored him with COVID Warrior Awards. These accolades were a testament to his tireless efforts and the profound impact of his work during the pandemic.
Mr. Samal's contributions extended beyond immediate relief efforts. He joined the National COVID Taskforce to coordinate and assist in the broader response to the pandemic. His involvement in the task force highlighted his leadership and commitment to helping those affected by the crisis.
The success of KBF's relief efforts was not just due to Mr. Samal's leadership but also the dedication and hard work of the entire KBF team. Volunteers and team members worked around the clock, often putting their own health at risk, to ensure that help reached those in need. Their unwavering support and teamwork were crucial in managing the crisis effectively.
The community's support was also invaluable. Many individuals and organizations contributed resources, time, and effort to KBF's initiatives. This collective action underscored the power of community and solidarity in overcoming challenges and supporting each other in times of crisis.
The COVID-19 pandemic taught us valuable lessons about preparedness, community support, and the importance of timely intervention. KBF has taken these lessons to heart, strengthening its emergency response capabilities and planning for future crises. By building on their experiences, they aim to be even more effective in providing aid and support during emergencies.
KBF's commitment to social work and community support remains unwavering. They continue to work towards their mission of socio-economic empowerment and cultural preservation, with a renewed focus on health and disaster preparedness. Their efforts during the pandemic have reinforced their resolve to serve the community and make a positive impact.
The COVID-19 pandemic was a challenging time for everyone, but the brave and selfless actions of organizations like Kalinga Bharti Foundation and leaders like Mr. Akshay Kumar Samal provided hope and relief to many. Their dedication, hard work, and compassion saved lives and demonstrated the power of community and solidarity.
